SLOVENIAN AUTHENTIC AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS

Slovenia is a country of various traditions and customs and, probably, the most pleasant way to visit Slovenia is tasting its various and rich cuisine. For such small territory we have plenty of local products which are protected and certified, so the quality and authenticity is guaranteed.
To help you to learn more about  this nice side of tourism, here in Slovenia, let's check some of the most known.
First of all, you have two main types of products: some are » protected designation of origin« , some are » protected geographical Indication«.
Here are the signs which can help you to distinguish these two groups:

Here is the  list of products which have sign » protected designation of origin«. Please, remember them well, so you will be able to distinguish these products from hundreds of other quality products in Slovenia ) So, let's start :
  1. Mohant is a type of cheese , produced in  Bohinj lake region, it is a soft cheese with a special , distinctive smell
  2. Kočevje forest honey comes from highly forested region of Kočevje
  3. Nanos cheese is produced since 16th century,is from Nanos plateau, it has intensive yellow colour
  4. Tolminc first appears in 1756 as "Formaggio di Tolmino - Tolminski sir"
  5. Extra virgin olive oil from Slovenian Istria is oil of superior quality, at least 30% of it must be from istrska belica type
  6. Karst honey has very high quality because of rich indigenous flora and dry climate
  7. Piran salt has 700-year-old tradition, produced by natural crystallization in salt fields
  8. Bovec cheese named after city of Bovec, produced from the sheep milk with addition of goat or cow milk
